How to convert an image

This free image converter changes the file format while keeping the original pixel width and height. Processing starts only after you choose an output format and select Convert image.

1. Choose a JPEG, PNG, WebP or still HEIC/HEIF image.
2. Select JPEG, PNG or WebP as the output format.
3. Set the quality for JPEG or WebP when you want to balance detail and file size.
4. Convert the image locally and review the new format, dimensions and file size.
5. Download the result or adjust the settings and convert it again.

Which image format should you choose?

JPEG is usually the practical choice for photographs when transparency is not required. It is widely supported and can produce compact files, but every new JPEG export uses lossy encoding.

PNG preserves sharp edges and transparent pixels without lossy compression. It works well for logos, screenshots, graphics and interface elements, but photographic PNG files can be much larger than JPEG or WebP.

WebP is useful for modern websites and supports both photographic content and transparency. Browser support is broad, although some older applications and workflows may still prefer JPEG or PNG.

How the quality setting works

The quality control applies to JPEG and WebP encoding. A lower value normally creates a smaller file by discarding more visual detail. The best setting depends on the image, so compare the preview and output size instead of relying on one percentage for every file.

At 100%, the browser requests its highest available lossy encoding quality. This does not mean that the result is mathematically lossless or that it will be smaller than the source. A well-optimized JPEG converted to maximum-quality WebP or JPEG can become larger. PNG output is lossless, and the quality control does not change PNG in the same way.

Transparency and background color

PNG and WebP can contain transparent pixels. JPEG cannot, so transparent areas are filled with white when you convert a transparent PNG or WebP image to JPEG. Check the preview before downloading if the source has a cut-out subject, transparent logo or rounded transparent corners.

Converting JPEG to PNG does not create useful transparency. It only places the same opaque image inside a PNG file, which will often increase the file size.

Converting HEIC and HEIF images

HEIC and HEIF are common camera formats on phones and can store images efficiently. The converter first tries the browser's native decoder. When native support is unavailable, it uses the reviewed self-hosted decoder included with this site.

The current tool accepts still images only. HEIC sequences and other multi-frame sources are rejected instead of silently exporting only one frame. The converted file keeps the decoded pixel dimensions but may not reproduce every advanced HDR or color-profile characteristic of the source.

Converter, resizer or compressor?

Use the converter when you need a different file format but want to keep the same pixel dimensions. Use the Image Resizer when you need to change width or height. Use the Image Compressor when the dimensions should remain unchanged and your main goal is a smaller file.

Changing format alone does not guarantee a smaller result. File size depends on the source, output format, image content, transparency and selected encoding quality.

Local processing and metadata

The converter is free to use. Your selected image is decoded and converted in the browser without an upload, telemetry or browser storage. The optional HEIC fallback is self-hosted and runs in a same-origin worker.

Conversion creates a new image file, so source EXIF, GPS, XMP, embedded thumbnails and similar metadata are not retained. Removing metadata can improve privacy, but it also means camera settings, location data and other source information will not appear in the downloaded copy.
