How to remove a white background from an image
- Choose a logo, a signature or a scan on a flat white or off-white background. It is opened in your browser.
- Look at the preview on the checkerboard. Raise the tolerance if pale specks of the background are left, lower it if the logo starts to lose its light parts.
- Leave the mode on Only the background around the subject to keep white inside the logo, or choose All white to clear letter counters and the gaps in a signature.
- For pale grey or cream paper, press the pick button and click the paper. Tick Smooth edges if the logo will sit on a dark page.
- Check the result on black or on a colour of your own, then press Download PNG.
What I measured on a logo and a signature
I do not have a real brand logo to test with, so I drew one: a black square, a thick ring with a white centre and a thin diagonal line, 600 × 400 pixels on pure white. With the default settings 30.3 % of the pixels are left and every white pixel around the shapes is transparent. The white inside the ring stays. With All white the share drops to 23.9 %, because the ring's centre goes too.
For the signature I made a 700 × 300 scan of dark blue ink on #f4f2ec paper with a little scanner noise added. White at 3 % tolerance leaves the paper alone. After I clicked the paper, 204,888 paper pixels were transparent, the ink was unchanged and 2.4 % of the pixels remained.
Remove the white background from a logo
A logo is flat colour on a flat background, which is the one case where this works well. Leave the mode on Only the background around the subject. The page starts at the edge of the image and clears the white it can reach, so white inside a logo stays. Turn on Smooth edges if the logo has soft edges and will go on a dark background. In my test, the antialiased edge pixels of a black logo averaged a grey of 113 on black without it and 42 with it, and none was lighter than in the source.
Remove the background from a signature
A signature is thin ink on paper, and paper is rarely pure white. Press the pick button and click the paper to use its colour. Choose All white, because the loops of a signature can enclose paper that the edge mode would keep. Keep the tolerance low so that pale strokes stay. If the ink is pale, the result will be pale too.
What this page cannot do
It does not detect a subject, a person or an object. It only compares each pixel with one colour. A photo with a shadowed or textured background will lose parts of the subject or keep parts of the background. For that you need a different tool; this one is for flat, near-white backgrounds.
Tips for better results
- Tolerance is how far a colour may differ from the background and still be removed. Start at 10 % and change it in small steps.
- Use Only the background around the subject for a logo with white parts you want to keep, and All white for a signature.
- Check the result on black as well as on the checkerboard. A pale fringe is easy to see there.
- A JPEG has noise around the edges. Smooth edges helps most there, and a PNG source gives the cleanest result.
- The PNG has the same pixel size as your image, so resize it afterwards if you need a smaller file.
