How to crop an image to an aspect ratio

This free image cropper lets you choose the shape of the final image and decide exactly which part of the photograph remains inside it. Cropping changes the composition and the exported pixel dimensions; it does not stretch the source.

1. Choose a JPEG, PNG or WebP image.
2. Select a common aspect ratio, enter a custom ratio or choose a social preset.
3. Drag the crop frame to reposition it and drag its handles to resize the selected area.
4. Use zoom and the arrow keys when you need more precise positioning.
5. Review the source crop and export dimensions, then choose the output format and quality.
6. Download the finished crop and check it at the size where it will be used.

Moving and resizing the crop frame

The area inside the crop frame becomes the exported image. Drag inside the frame to move it over the photograph. Drag a corner or edge handle to resize the frame while preserving the selected aspect ratio. The shaded area outside the frame will be removed.

Use the keyboard arrow keys for small positional adjustments after focusing the preview. Zoom enlarges the image beneath the fixed composition, which is useful when the subject needs to fill more of the crop. Reset returns to the initial crop, while Maximum size uses the largest valid source area for the selected ratio.

Understanding common aspect ratios

An aspect ratio describes the relationship between width and height, not a fixed number of pixels. A 1:1 image can be 500×500 or 2000×2000 pixels; both files have the same square shape.

Using social media presets

The included presets combine a ratio with practical export dimensions for Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, LinkedIn and Facebook/Meta workflows. Choosing one updates the crop shape and target export size together, but you can still reposition the crop before downloading.

Platform specifications and automatic in-app cropping can change. Treat these presets as convenient starting points and verify the latest requirements in the destination platform before preparing an important campaign or a large batch of images.

Export size and preventing upscaling

General ratios export the largest safe size available from the selected source crop. A social preset requests its listed dimensions. When Prevent upscaling is enabled, the cropper will not invent extra pixels if the selected source area is smaller than the requested output.

Keeping upscaling disabled usually produces a cleaner result. The maximum export is 8,192 pixels on the longest side and 32 megapixels. On iPhone and iPad, the longest export side is limited to 4,096 pixels for more reliable browser processing.

Choosing format and export quality

JPEG is suitable for photographs without transparency and uses the selected quality value. WebP also supports adjustable quality and can preserve transparency. PNG is lossless, so its export does not use the quality control in the same way and may be substantially larger for photographic content.

JPEG cannot store transparent pixels. If a transparent PNG or WebP is exported as JPEG, transparent areas are filled with white. The default 92% quality is a practical starting point, but the final file size depends on the image content and the browser's encoder.

Local processing, metadata and limits

The image cropper is free to use. Image decoding, crop interaction and export happen locally in your browser. The image is not uploaded to an image-processing API, and temporary object URLs are revoked after use. Export creates a new file, so source EXIF, GPS, XMP and similar metadata are not retained.

The cropper accepts genuine static JPEG, PNG and WebP files up to 50 MB, 80 megapixels and 30,000 pixels on either side. File signatures and dimensions are checked before decoding. SVG, HEIC, HEIF, AVIF and animated image workflows are outside the scope of this version.
