Turn a Video into Images, One Every N Seconds
Turn a video into a set of pictures. Take one frame every few seconds or mark the ones you want, and get them in one numbered ZIP.
How to turn a video into images
- Drop the video on the box. This page starts on JPG and one frame every 2 seconds.
- Press Mark them to mark one frame at 0 s, 2 s, 4 s and on to the end. Change the seconds to space them closer or wider.
- Look at the list of marked times. Press Mark this frame to add a moment of your own, or Clear marks to start again.
- Press Save marked frames as ZIP. Each picture is a full frame, and the ZIP is numbered in time order.
What I count on before I save a set
With a set of pictures the first question is how many there will be. On this page the count is the length of the video divided by the gap, rounded up, because the first frame is always at 0 s. A 5.0 s clip with a frame every 2 seconds gives 3 pictures, at 0, 2 and 4 s.
I checked it on my test clip of 50 flat-colour frames at 10 frames per second. A gap of 1 second gave 5 frames, a gap of 2 seconds gave 3 and a gap of half a second gave 10. The ZIP held colour-frames-001-0.000s.jpg and the rest, and sorting the names put them in time order.
How many pictures a video gives
| Video length | One frame every | Pictures |
|---|---|---|
| 5 seconds | 1 second | 5 |
| 60 seconds | 5 seconds | 12 |
| 90 seconds | 10 seconds | 9 |
| 30 seconds | 0.5 seconds | 60 |
| 10 minutes | 1 second | 600, over the limit of 500, so the page asks for a longer gap |
The first four rows are what the page marks; the last is what it refuses, with a message, instead of building a very large archive.
One frame every N seconds
A video is a stream of frames, and a set of pictures is usually wanted at an even pace: a contact sheet of a talk, the slides of a recorded lecture, a progress picture for every few seconds of a build. The gap box takes a number of seconds, and a comma works as a decimal point, so 0,5 is half a second.
Marks add up. You can mark every 10 seconds, then add two frames of your own, and the ZIP holds all of them. Clear marks starts over.
What is inside the ZIP
Every picture is named after the video, a number and the time of the frame, such as colour-frames-003-2.000s.jpg. The number has at least three digits, so a file manager sorts the pictures in time order even past 99. The ZIP is stored without extra compression because JPG and PNG are already compressed, and it opens in any archive tool on a phone or a computer.
The ZIP cannot be larger than 4 GB, and a message appears if the pictures would not fit. Saving as JPG gives much smaller files than PNG for photographic video.
Long videos on a phone
The page keeps the video on disk and draws one frame at a time. Each frame is turned into a file and released before the next, so memory use stays near that of one picture plus the files made so far. A 3840 × 2160 frame is 8,294,400 px, and on a phone a few dozen of those as PNG is the point to switch to JPG or to a longer gap.
Tips for turning a video into images
- Pick the gap from the length: a 60 second video every 5 seconds gives 12 pictures.
- Use JPG for a large set and PNG when you will edit the pictures.
- Mark the set first, then look at the times in the list; click one to see its frame.
- For a thousand frames, save in rounds: mark 500, save, clear and mark again.
Privacy
Your video never leaves your device. The browser plays it from your own disk and the page draws frames from that player, so nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How do I turn a video into an image sequence?
Mark one frame every second or fraction of a second and save the marked frames as a ZIP. The pictures are numbered 001, 002 and on, so they sort in time order. Up to 500 frames fit in one ZIP.
How many frames can I get from a video?
As many as the video has, up to 500 in one ZIP. A 60 second video at one frame every 5 seconds gives 12. For more than 500, mark a part, save it, clear the marks and mark the next part.
Is there a video to image converter online that does not upload?
This one. Your browser plays the video from your own device and the frames are drawn there, so nothing is sent. The same pictures come out at the video's own width and height.
Is a video to image converter the same as a screenshot?
No. A screenshot has the size of your screen, while a frame has the size of the video. A 3840 × 2160 video saved here gives 3840 × 2160 px even if you watch it in a small window.
Do the images in the ZIP keep their order?
Yes. Each name has a number of at least three digits and the time of the frame, so on my 5 second test clip the five files ran from 001-0.000s to 005-4.000s in any file manager.
