YouTube Thumbnail Cropper for 16:9 Videos
Crop a photo to a 16:9 YouTube thumbnail at 3840 × 2160 px. The saved file stays under 2 MB, the mobile upload limit, or the cropper says so.
How to crop a YouTube thumbnail
- Choose the photo. The cropper opens at YouTube thumbnail, 16:9 at 3840 × 2160 px, with the social presets open.
- Move the frame so the subject sits in the upper part of the picture, clear of the video length in the bottom right corner.
- Press Download crop. If the file is over 2 MB, the cropper lowers the quality of a JPEG or WebP in steps, down to 40%, and the Downloaded line reports a file that is still over the limit.
- Read the Downloaded line. If it says the file is over the mobile limit, use a photo with less detail and crop again.
The thumbnail sizes I checked on 30 October 2026
YouTube's help article on custom thumbnails gives the size this page makes: 3840 × 2160 pixels for a video, 16:9, with a minimum width of 640 pixels, as a JPG or PNG. On 30 October 2026 the same article set the file limits by device: 2 MB for an upload from a phone or tablet, and 50 MB from a desktop.
The cropper saves the crop at exactly 3840 × 2160 px. It then checks the file. A JPEG or WebP over 2 MB is saved again at a lower quality, stepping down from the slider's value to 40%. If it is still over 2 MB at that step, the Downloaded line says so plainly, because a phone upload would be refused.
The YouTube thumbnail sizes and limits
| Thumbnail | Pixels | Ratio | Mobile limit | Desktop limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Video thumbnail (this page) | 3840 × 2160 | 16:9 | 2 MB | 50 MB |
| Smallest video thumbnail | 640 px wide | 16:9 | 2 MB | 50 MB |
| Shorts thumbnail (its own page) | 2160 × 3840 | 9:16 | 2 MB | 50 MB |

The size, the shape and the enlargement
YouTube asks for 3840 × 2160 px, the 4K size of a 16:9 frame. Its minimum is 640 pixels wide, so a smaller thumbnail is accepted, but it is shown less sharply on a large screen.
This page leaves Prevent upscaling off so that the export reaches 3840 × 2160 px from any photo. A photo of 1920 pixels wide is enlarged twice, and enlarging adds no detail. A sharp, larger original gives the better thumbnail.
How the cropper applies the 2 MB limit
Detailed photographs, such as foliage or a crowd, make the largest JPEGs. The cropper saves at the quality shown on its slider, 82% by default. If the file is over 2 MB, it saves again 10 points lower, down to 40%, and stops there.
Each step down makes the file smaller and the picture softer. A PNG has no quality setting, so a PNG over 2 MB is not lowered; the Downloaded line reports its size instead. Choose JPEG for a photograph.
Tips for a YouTube thumbnail
- Start from the largest sharp copy of the photo you have; a smaller one is enlarged to 3840 × 2160 px.
- Keep the subject clear of the bottom right corner, where YouTube shows the length of the video.
- Use large, simple shapes and few words. A thumbnail is seen at a small size in search results.
- Save as JPEG for a photograph; the 2 MB limit is easier to meet with JPEG than with PNG.
- Check the Downloaded line before you upload: it must not say the file is over the limit.
Privacy
Your image never leaves your device. Opening, cropping and saving all happen in your browser, so nothing is uploaded or stored, and you do not need an account. The saved file does not keep the original EXIF, GPS or XMP data.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube Help asks for 3840 × 2160 pixels for a video thumbnail, a 16:9 shape with a minimum width of 640 pixels. Upload it as a JPG or PNG. This page saves exactly 3840 × 2160 pixels.
What is the YouTube thumbnail file size limit?
YouTube Help gives 2 MB for an upload from a mobile device and 50 MB from a desktop. The cropper lowers the quality of a JPEG or WebP to get it under 2 MB, and says plainly when even the lowest step is still over the limit. A PNG is never lowered, so the Downloaded line reports its size.
Is a YouTube thumbnail 16:9?
For a video, yes. The help article asks for 16:9, and this page's preset is 16:9 at 3840 × 2160 pixels. A Short takes a 9:16 thumbnail instead, which has its own page here.
Can I make a YouTube thumbnail from a small photo?
Yes, but the photo is enlarged to 3840 × 2160 pixels, since Prevent upscaling is off here. Enlarging adds no detail, so a larger, sharp photo gives a clearer thumbnail than a small one.
Is the YouTube thumbnail cropper free and private?
Yes. The photo is cropped and saved in your browser, so it is never uploaded, and no account is needed. You download the thumbnail yourself and upload it to YouTube Studio.
