This YouTube Adobe Lightroom tutorial was the first time I recorded my photo-editing process instead of trying to describe it in a message. I had been receiving questions about how I edited my photographs, and video seemed like the clearest answer: viewers could watch the image change, see the order of my decisions and decide which ideas might fit their own work.
The photograph comes from Bike Park Kranjska Gora in Slovenia. It gave me the right kind of material for a first lesson — movement, an identifiable subject, natural surroundings and enough tonal and colour information to show how an edit can guide attention without replacing the original moment.
The video remains an archive of how I worked in 2023. Lightroom’s interface has changed since then, and it will change again, but the important part of an editing tutorial is not the exact location of a button. It is the sequence of decisions: understand the frame, correct what distracts, strengthen what matters and stop before the processing becomes the subject.

This is not a frame-by-frame transcript. The written guide below is a companion to the video and a durable version of the workflow I use. Your Lightroom panels may look different depending on whether you use Lightroom, Lightroom Classic, mobile or a newer release, but the underlying questions remain similar.
What actually changed in this edit
The image at the top of this article is the before-and-after pair from the video, and it is worth reading carefully before watching a single slider move. It is the same frame that opens my Bike Park Kranjska Gora article: a rider in a black jersey and Muc-Off helmet, chest-deep in summer vegetation, with the limestone wall of the Julian Alps behind him.
Placed side by side, the changes are not dramatic, and that is the point:
- The haze came out of the mountain. In the original the rock face is a pale, washed grey-blue that sits almost on the same tonal level as the sky. In the finished version it separates into a distinct blue mass with visible structure.
- The blacks were set lower. The rider’s jersey, gloves and the shadowed side of the helmet are denser, which is what makes him read as a solid shape rather than a grey silhouette dissolving into the grass.
- The greens gained depth rather than intensity. The foreground plants in the original are pale and slightly yellow; afterwards they are deeper and cooler, so the eye stops treating them as the brightest thing in the frame.
- Overall contrast increased modestly. Nothing is crushed and no highlight is blown, but the flat, low-contrast rendering of the RAW file is gone.
What did not change is equally instructive. The composition is untouched, no element has been removed, the light still comes from the same direction and the scene still looks like the afternoon I stood in. The edit made the photograph legible. It did not invent a different photograph.

The order is not sacred. I may return to crop after adjusting light, or reduce colour after a local mask. What matters is starting with the largest decisions before spending time on details no one will notice.
1. Start by deciding what the photograph is about
Before I move a slider, I try to name the subject in one sentence. In the bike-park image, the subject is not simply “a rider.” It is the concentration and movement of the rider within a summer landscape. That definition affects every later choice.
If I brighten every part of the frame equally, the background may compete with the rider. If I crop too tightly, I may lose the sense of place and speed. If I push colour too far, the scene may stop feeling like the light I photographed.
This short pause prevents Lightroom from becoming a random sequence of experiments. I can still experiment, but I know what the experiment is trying to improve.
Questions I ask before editing
- Where does my eye go first?
- Is that where I want it to go?
- Which element provides context?
- What is distracting but removable through framing or tone?
- Is the image intended to feel natural, dramatic, quiet, warm or cold?
- Does the file have a technical problem, or do I merely want a different interpretation?
2. Crop and straighten before polishing details
Cropping changes the relationship between every object in the photograph. That makes it a structural decision, not a finishing touch.
I check the horizon and strong verticals first. A tilted frame can make an otherwise careful edit feel accidental. Lightroom’s Crop, Rotate and Geometry tools can straighten lines or correct perspective, but I use automatic corrections as a proposal rather than an order. Architecture sometimes needs precise verticals; an action photograph may lose energy if every diagonal is forced into perfect alignment.
For a moving rider, space in front of the movement can help the frame breathe. A crop that places the subject against the edge toward which they are travelling can create visual pressure. Sometimes that tension is intentional. Usually, I want the direction and available space to work together.
I also select the aspect ratio with the destination in mind. A print, website header and vertical social post may need different crops. I preserve the uncropped original and create virtual copies when several final versions are useful.
3. Set white balance and overall exposure
White balance controls the blue–yellow and green–magenta relationship in the image. The camera’s automatic setting is a starting point. RAW capture lets me change it later without the same penalty as a heavily compressed finished file.
I look for surfaces that should feel neutral, but I do not insist that every photograph be mathematically neutral. Warm evening light should usually remain warm. A cool winter scene can lose its atmosphere if corrected toward daylight comfort.
Exposure comes next. I watch the histogram, but I also look at the subject. A technically centred histogram does not guarantee that a face, helmet or important patch of landscape has the right brightness.
A practical tonal order
- Adjust Exposure for the overall brightness.
- Pull Highlights back if important bright detail is recoverable.
- Open Shadows only as far as the scene needs.
- Set Whites and Blacks to establish endpoints and contrast.
- Revisit Exposure because the four tonal controls change the balance.
Opening every shadow can flatten an image and reveal noise. Recovering every highlight can make bright light look grey. I want useful detail, not equal brightness everywhere.
4. Build contrast without crushing the file
Contrast gives separation to forms and helps the subject read quickly. Lightroom offers several ways to create it: the Contrast slider, Whites and Blacks, the Tone Curve, Dehaze, Texture and Clarity. These controls overlap, but they do not look identical.
The Tone Curve gives me more control over where contrast appears. A gentle S-curve can deepen darker tones and lift brighter ones while leaving some midtones relatively stable. It is easy to overdo. If faces become harsh, dark clothing loses texture or the background breaks into aggressive patches, I reduce the effect.
Clarity changes midtone contrast and can make texture feel stronger. Texture operates more locally on fine detail. Dehaze can add density and cut atmospheric softness. On the right photograph, each is useful. Applied globally at high values, they can make foliage, skin and edge transitions look brittle.
For action photography, I usually want the rider and equipment to feel crisp without turning every leaf and blade of grass into a competing subject. The mountain in the before-and-after above is a good example of the balance: it needed enough density to stop looking like fog, but not so much that it started competing with the rider for attention.
5. Refine colour with a reason
Colour editing is where a technically competent photograph can quickly become mannered. I begin globally with Vibrance or a modest Saturation change, then move to the Color Mixer only when a particular hue needs attention.
Vibrance generally protects already saturated colours more than the Saturation slider does, but it is not an automatic “safe” control. I still watch skin, clothing, paint and foliage. Strong green and yellow can dominate outdoor photographs long before the subject feels improved.
The Color Mixer separates hue, saturation and luminance by colour range. It is useful when the grass is too bright, a blue garment needs a small shift or orange tones require more restraint. The danger is forgetting that one colour can appear in several important objects. Changing all oranges may alter skin as well as the intended background.
Color Grading can introduce separate tints into shadows, midtones and highlights. I use it to unify an image, not to prove that the tool is present. A slight cool shadow and warm highlight relationship can add depth. A heavy cinematic split can overwhelm a documentary photograph.
6. Use masks to guide attention locally
Global adjustments affect the entire photograph. Masks let me work on a subject, sky, object, gradient or selected tonal/colour range without changing everything else.
For the bike-park photograph, a local mask might help the rider remain legible against surrounding vegetation. That does not mean painting a bright halo around the body. Small adjustments to exposure, shadows, texture or colour are usually more convincing than one dramatic local effect.
I inspect mask edges at a useful magnification. Automated selections are powerful, but hair, spokes, branches and gaps between objects can expose errors. If the mask is doing more work than the photograph, I simplify it.
When a mask is genuinely useful
- The subject is slightly darker than the surrounding scene.
- A bright edge or corner pulls attention away.
- The sky needs a different tonal treatment from the ground.
- A colour adjustment should affect one object rather than every similar hue.
- Texture belongs on the subject but not on skin or the entire background.
When I leave the image alone
If the subject already reads clearly, a mask may add complexity without value. Not every image needs subject detection, a sky replacement, lens blur or selective sharpening. The absence of an adjustment is also an editing decision.
7. Sharpen and reduce noise at the correct scale
Sharpening is easiest to judge close to 100% view. At fit-to-screen size, the preview can hide halos and noise. At extreme magnification, normal texture can look like a crisis.
RAW files usually require some capture sharpening. I balance Amount with Radius, Detail and Masking so that useful edges gain definition without sharpening flat areas. Holding the appropriate modifier key while adjusting Masking in Lightroom Classic can help reveal which edges are being targeted.
Noise reduction depends on ISO, exposure and output. Luminance noise can resemble grain; colour noise appears as unwanted coloured speckles. Removing too much creates waxy surfaces and erases small detail. A clean file that no longer looks photographic is not an improvement.
Current Lightroom versions also include more advanced denoise tools for supported file types. They can be effective, but I still compare the result with the original and judge it at the final output size.
8. Compare before and after honestly
The before/after view is not there to reward the largest transformation. It is there to reveal whether the photograph became clearer, more coherent and closer to the intention I named at the beginning.
I look away from the screen for a moment, return and ask:
- Does the subject read faster?
- Do any colours feel artificial?
- Have I preserved believable highlight and shadow relationships?
- Is the horizon or perspective distracting?
- Did local adjustments create visible edges?
- Does the image still feel like the scene I photographed?
I also reduce the image on screen. A photograph that looks impressive at 100% can become busy at normal viewing size. If the final destination is a website or phone, that smaller view matters.
9. Export for the destination
Lightroom edits are non-destructive instructions until I export a new file. Export settings should follow the destination rather than one universal recipe.

I avoid uploading a full-resolution file merely because it exists. Correct sizing improves page performance and reduces unnecessary storage. At the same time, I do not repeatedly resave an already compressed JPEG. I export again from the RAW workflow when a new version is required. When I only need to change dimensions or file size after export, my image resizer and image compressor handle that directly in the browser.
Lightroom editing mistakes I try to avoid
Copying settings without reading the photograph
A preset or tutorial setting reflects another image’s light, colour and exposure. It can be a starting point, but it cannot understand my subject. I adjust by looking, not by treating numbers as a password.
Recovering every shadow
Darkness can provide structure and mood. If every shadow is opened, the result can become flat, noisy and less believable.
Using saturation to create interest
Colour intensity cannot replace timing or composition. When saturation becomes the main reason an image attracts attention, I reconsider the edit.
Sharpening at fit-to-screen view
The preview may hide artifacts. I inspect critical edges at 100%, then return to normal size to see whether the benefit remains.
Ignoring the final output
An edit for a large print may need different sharpening and tonal decisions from a small web image. I decide where the photograph is going before the final export.
What I learned from making my first tutorial
Recording the screen forced me to explain choices that had become automatic. That was useful for me as well as for viewers. When I could not describe why I moved a control, I had to consider whether the adjustment was necessary.
The first video was also a reminder that teaching and video production are separate skills. My priority was the edit and the reasoning behind it, not an elaborate introduction. I have always been a photographer first. Starting with a simple recording was better than waiting for perfect video technique and never publishing the lesson.
That is also the approach I recommend for learning Lightroom: begin with one photograph and one clear problem. Do not try to master every panel in a day. Learn what aperture and shutter speed did to the original capture, then use editing to refine the result rather than repair decisions the camera never recorded.

A useful YouTube Adobe Lightroom tutorial should leave the viewer with more than a look to copy. It should make the next edit easier to think through.
My sequence remains simple: identify the subject, fix composition, balance light, refine colour, use local adjustments only where they help, compare the result and export for a real destination. The settings will change from one file to the next. The discipline of making each adjustment answer a visible need does not.
