Crop Your Facebook Profile Picture With a Circle Preview
Crop a Facebook profile picture to a square 320 × 320 px file and see the circle it will be shown in. It runs in your browser.
How to crop a Facebook profile picture
- Choose the photo. The cropper opens at Facebook profile picture, 1:1, 320 × 320 px.
- Check the circle in the preview. Facebook shows your picture round, and everything outside the ring is cut.
- Move the frame and zoom until the face sits in the middle of the ring.
- Press Download crop and upload the square file in Facebook. The shading is not in the file.
Profile and Page, one size
People search for this size for a personal profile and for a business Page, and the answer is the same for both. Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Buffer all list 320 × 320 pixels, a 1:1 shape, and a circular crop. I read them on 30 October 2026, because Meta's help pages returned an error that day.
The sources disagree about how large Facebook shows the picture. Sprout Social and Hootsuite say 176 pixels on a desktop and 196 on a smartphone; Metricool gives other numbers. I quote the first two and note that I could not settle it from Facebook itself.
The numbers behind the 320 × 320 crop
| Measure | Value | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Recommended upload | 320 × 320 px, 1:1 | Sprout Social, Hootsuite, Buffer |
| Shown on desktop | 176 × 176 px | Sprout Social, Hootsuite |
| Shown on a smartphone | 196 × 196 px | Sprout Social, Hootsuite |
| Inside the circle | 78.5% of the square | my arithmetic, π ÷ 4 |
The upload is larger than the 176 pixels a desktop shows, so a sharp 320 pixel file stays sharp on a phone at 196 pixels.
| My photo | Square source crop | Saved at |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Jasna, 960 × 1200 px | 960 × 960 px | 320 × 320 px |
| Red bicycle, 1200 × 800 px | 800 × 800 px | 320 × 320 px |
Both crops are reduced, not enlarged. A person photographed at the edge of the frame would still lose the corners to the circle.
Why Facebook crops the corners
Buffer warns against putting anything important near the corners of a Facebook profile picture, because the circle removes them. Facebook also lays the picture over the lower left of your cover photo, so a busy picture is seen small and next to another image. Plain backgrounds and a clear face hold up best.
A picture and a cover that belong together
I crop the profile picture first and the cover second, because the picture sits over the cover's lower left. The Facebook cover photo cropper shows the part a phone cuts off. For a post in the feed use the Facebook post image cropper.
Tips for a Facebook profile picture
- Put the face in the middle; the corners are cut by the circle.
- Use the same face crop for your Page and your profile if you want people to recognise both.
- A plain background survives the small display sizes better than a busy one.
- Upload the square file Facebook asks for and let it draw the circle.
- Check the picture next to your cover photo before you publish both.
Privacy
Your image never leaves your device. Opening, cropping and saving all happen in your browser, so nothing is uploaded or stored, and you do not need an account. The saved file does not keep the original EXIF, GPS or XMP data.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Facebook profile picture crop size?
Sprout Social, Hootsuite and Buffer recommend 320 × 320 pixels. This cropper opens at that preset and saves a file of exactly that size, square and without the circle.
Why is my Facebook profile picture cropped too small?
Facebook shows a circle, so the corners of the square are cut, about 21.5% of the area. If the face looks small, zoom in here until it fills the ring and save again.
How many pixels is a Facebook profile picture?
Upload 320 × 320. Sprout Social and Hootsuite say Facebook shows it at 176 pixels on a desktop and 196 on a smartphone, so the file has room to stay sharp on both.
What ratio should a Facebook profile picture have?
The ratio is 1:1, a square. Facebook applies the circular mask itself, so keep the file square and keep the subject away from the corners of the frame.
Is the profile picture the same on a Page and a profile?
The sources I read list the same 320 × 320 size for both a personal profile and a business Page, with a circular display on each. Pages and profiles differ in their cover photos, by the minimum size.
