How to plan a gallery wall
- Set the wall width and height in centimetres or inches. The planner starts with a 300 × 240 cm wall.
- Pick a ready layout and a frame size, then press Arrange this layout. The arrangement is centred on the wall, and you can add single frames by size as well.
- Drag the frames on the wall with a mouse or a finger. With snap on, a frame stops at exactly the gap you set from its neighbour. Rotate a selected frame between portrait and landscape.
- Add up to 12 photos if you want to see them in the frames. Each photo is cropped to fill its frame, and an empty frame shows a neutral fill.
- Read the group size and the measurements, then download the PNG or the A4 PDF and hang the wall from the numbers.
Why the planner starts with 20 × 30 cm frames
I print mostly 20 × 30 cm and A3 at a local lab, so the planner starts with 20 × 30 cm frames and a 3 × 3 grid. A3 is in the frame size list as well.
The numbers in the examples on this page are the planner's own, for the default wall and a 3 × 3 grid.
The group is the frames together
The group is the box round all the frames, from the outside edge of the outermost frame to the opposite one. A 3 × 3 grid of 20 × 30 cm frames with a 5 cm gap measures 70.0 × 100.0 cm. The planner checks the group against the wall and says so when it is wider or taller than the wall.
Frames can be moved by hand after the layout is arranged, so the group changes with them. The width and height always show the group as it is now.
Hang the group from its centre line
The planner centres the group 145 cm above the floor. Change that number and the whole group moves up or down, keeping the spaces between the frames. For the 3 × 3 grid the top of the group is 195.0 cm and the bottom is 95.0 cm from the floor.
Measure from the floor to the centre line first, then hang the group so the middle of the arrangement lands on it.
Each frame has two numbers
Every frame is measured from the left edge of the wall to its left edge, and from the floor to its bottom edge. For the top left frame of the 3 × 3 grid those are 115.0 cm and 165.0 cm. The frame list gives both numbers for every frame, in the unit you chose.
Mark the wall at those two distances for each frame, then check the spacing against the gap in the list.
Printing the plan
The PNG and the A4 PDF both carry the plan and the measurement list on one page. The plan is drawn to fit the page, so read the sizes from the list, not from the drawing. The PDF is one A4 page for the printer; the numbers on it are the ones the planner calculated.
Tips for better results
- Type the wall size first, so the group is checked against your real wall before you place any frame.
- The planner starts with a 5 cm gap, which keeps a grid looking tidy; use a bigger gap when the frames are very different in size.
- Arrange a ready layout first, then drag the one frame that does not fit into place.
- Switch to inches when your frames or your tape measure use them; every number converts, and switching back gives the same values.
- Keep snap on for the gap, and turn it off only when you want a frame at a distance that is not the gap.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know where to hang each frame?
Each frame has two numbers: the distance from the left edge of the wall to the frame's left edge, and the distance from the floor to its bottom edge. The list under the plan gives both for every frame, and the group centre height you set is the centre of the whole arrangement.
Is there a gallery wall layout generator?
Yes. Choose a ready layout such as a 3 × 3 grid, a row of 5, a staircase or a salon mix, and press Arrange this layout. The planner centres it on your wall and gives the size of the group.
What size is a 3 × 3 gallery wall?
With 20 × 30 cm frames and a 5 cm gap, a 3 × 3 grid measures 70.0 × 100.0 cm. Change the frame size or the gap and the planner recalculates the group at once.
Can I see my photos in the frames?
Yes, up to 12 photos. Each photo is cropped to fill its frame, in the order of the frames. A frame without a photo shows a neutral fill, so you can plan the empty spaces too.
Can I print the gallery wall plan?
Yes. Download the plan as a PNG, or as an A4 PDF with the plan and the measurement list on one page, and print that page at its actual size.
