How to crop a LinkedIn banner

  1. Choose the photo. The cropper opens at LinkedIn profile banner, 4:1 at 1584 × 396 px, with the social presets open.
  2. Move the frame over the strip you want. Your profile photo covers the lower left of the banner, so keep the subject and any words to the upper right.
  3. Read the Downloaded line. It should say 1584 × 396 px, and the file should be under 8 MB.
  4. Press Download crop. The file name ends in 4x1, so it stays apart from your other crops.

Profile cover or company page: which size

LinkedIn has two kinds of banner, and they are different sizes. The one on a personal profile is the cover picture behind your name and headline. LinkedIn Help gives 1584 × 396 px for it, as a JPG or PNG under 8 MB. I built this page for that personal profile cover only, so it makes that one file.

A company page has its own cover, and its size is not 1584 × 396 px. Look up that size in LinkedIn's help for company pages before you crop a banner for one, then set the frame with the Custom ratio section of the cropper.

The first row is the size this page makes. The other two are for other uses, so do not crop a banner to them.

Where your profile photo sits

On a personal profile your photo is placed over the lower left of the cover. Only the rest of the strip stays in view around it, so the banner works best when its main image is in the upper right.

Before you download, check the preview frame against that corner. A face or a sign at the lower left would sit under the photo, and a word there would be hidden. Move the frame so that the important part of the picture is on the right.

Why the banner is so wide

A 4:1 strip is much wider than a camera photo. A 3:2 landscape loses a large part of its height when it becomes a banner, so the frame cuts the top and bottom. Drag the frame to the band you want, then use the zoom slider so the subject fills the strip.

This page leaves Prevent upscaling off. A photo narrower than 1584 pixels is enlarged to fit the exact size, and the enlarged picture is softer than the original.

Tips for a LinkedIn banner

  • Use the largest copy of the photo you have. A narrow photo is enlarged to 1584 pixels wide and loses sharpness.
  • Keep small text out of the strip. A banner is seen at a small size on a phone.
  • Save a photograph as JPEG and a graphic with flat colours as PNG.
  • Check the Downloaded line before you upload: the size should be 1584 × 396 px and the file under 8 MB.

Privacy

Your image never leaves your device. Opening, cropping and saving all happen in your browser, so nothing is uploaded or stored, and you do not need an account. The saved file does not keep the original EXIF, GPS or XMP data.

Frequently asked questions

What is the LinkedIn banner size?

For a personal profile, LinkedIn Help gives 1584 × 396 pixels, a 4:1 strip. Upload it as a JPG or PNG under 8 MB. Company pages have their own cover size, so check that one separately before you crop a banner for a company.

What is the LinkedIn banner crop size for a company page?

A company page cover is not 1584 × 396 pixels. This cropper makes the personal profile size. Look up the company page size in LinkedIn's help, then set the frame with the Custom ratio section of the cropper to match it.

Where does the profile photo cover the LinkedIn banner?

On a personal profile the photo sits over the lower left of the cover. Keep the subject and any words in the upper right, so the picture still reads with the photo in place.

Is the LinkedIn banner cropper free?

Yes. The photo is cropped and saved in your browser and is never uploaded, and you do not need an account. Download the crop at 1584 × 396 pixels and upload it to your profile yourself.

Which format should a LinkedIn banner be?

LinkedIn Help lists JPG and PNG for the profile cover, under 8 MB. Save a photograph as JPEG and a graphic with flat colours as PNG. The Downloaded line shows the file size, so you can check it before you upload.
