Make a favicon with six sizes

Turn PNG, JPG or SVG artwork into a six-size favicon and a matching set of PNG images.

Local browser processing · No upload · No account required

Artwork is fitted inside a transparent square without cropping. SVG files need explicit dimensions or a viewBox.

How to make a multi-size favicon

  1. Choose a PNG, JPG or SVG logo. A square PNG with transparency is a useful starting point.
  2. Press Create favicon to build all six sizes locally.
  3. Inspect the previews, especially the smallest 16-pixel version.
  4. Download the ICO for the website and the PNG set as a ZIP if needed.

Why I inspect the smallest icon

I judge a favicon at the size people actually see in a browser tab. Fine lettering that looks clear at 256 pixels often turns into a blur at 16. I prefer a simple mark with strong contrast, and I check it against both a light and a dark browser theme before publishing.

What I checked in the browser

In my browser check, one input produced an ICO with six directory entries: 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixels. Each entry held a PNG of the stated dimensions. The PNG ZIP contained those same six square images.

One ICO holds several images

An ICO file has a directory followed by its image data. This converter stores a PNG at each of the six sizes, with transparency preserved where the input supports it. Current browsers can choose the entry that matches their display. Very old software that requires bitmap-only ICO files may not accept PNG entries.

Fitting a rectangular logo

The artwork is scaled proportionally and centred in a square. Empty space stays transparent. Nothing is stretched or cropped, which protects a complete wordmark but can make it very small. For a narrow logo, choose a simpler square symbol before conversion.

SVG artwork and the PNG set

SVG is rendered as an image, not inserted into the page. Scripts do not run and external resources are not loaded by the image decoder. Supply self-contained artwork with explicit dimensions or a viewBox. The PNG set can be used wherever separate raster icons are required; the largest here is 256 pixels, so it is not an Apple touch icon package.

Tips for better results

  • Avoid tiny text and thin lines at the 16-pixel preview.
  • Use transparent PNG or SVG when you want a clear background.
  • Keep the source at least 256 pixels square to avoid enlarging a small raster logo.

Frequently asked questions

Which sizes are inside the ICO?

Every output includes 16, 32, 48, 64, 128 and 256 pixel square images. The file directory records all six entries. A size byte of zero in that directory represents 256, as required by the ICO format.

Can I convert a JPG logo?

Yes. JPEG images are fitted into a square just like PNG files. The JPEG’s own background stays opaque; conversion cannot recover transparency that was not present in the source artwork.

Why does my wide logo look small?

The whole image is fitted within each square without cropping. A wide rectangle therefore leaves empty space above and below. A separate compact symbol usually reads more clearly than a full wordmark in a browser tab.

Are my SVG files uploaded?

No. The browser reads the selected file and renders it locally into the six images. The resulting ICO and PNG ZIP are created on your device and downloaded directly from this page.
