TikTok Photo Cropper for Vertical Posts
Crop a photo for TikTok in your browser. The cropper opens at 1080 × 1920 px, the common vertical size, and saves a JPEG, PNG or WebP.
How to crop a photo for TikTok
- Choose the photo. The cropper opens at TikTok vertical, 9:16 at 1080 × 1920 px, with the social presets open.
- Keep 9:16 for a full-screen vertical picture, or pick the TikTok square or landscape preset if your post needs another shape.
- Drag the frame over the part of the photo that should stay in view. The export size does not change while you move it.
- Press Download crop. The file name ends in 9x16, so it is easy to tell from your other crops.
What TikTok asks for, and what I use
TikTok's own guide for photo posts is short. Its Content Posting API media transfer guide lists WebP and JPEG as the formats, a maximum of 1080p for each picture, and 20 MB for each image. It does not ask for a particular crop, and it does not say that a photo must be 1080 × 1920 pixels.
I still use 1080 × 1920 px for vertical photos. It is the 9:16 size with the shorter side at 1080 pixels, so it stays inside the 1080p limit, and it is the size of the cropper's TikTok vertical preset. If your picture is square or wide, the square and landscape presets in the same group give 1080 × 1080 and 1920 × 1080 px.
The TikTok sizes on this page
| Use | Pixels | Ratio | Where the size comes from |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vertical photo | 1080 × 1920 | 9:16 | The common vertical size; the cropper's TikTok vertical preset |
| Square photo | 1080 × 1080 | 1:1 | The cropper's TikTok square preset |
| Landscape photo | 1920 × 1080 | 16:9 | The cropper's TikTok landscape preset |
| Largest picture | 1080p, shorter side | Any | TikTok Content Posting API guide: WebP or JPEG, 20 MB for each image |
The first three rows are sizes the cropper makes; the last row is TikTok's limit. Nothing in the table is a measured file size.
Vertical, square or landscape on TikTok
A 9:16 photo fills the height of a phone screen, so it suits a single picture post better than a wide crop. Keep the subject in the middle of the frame and leave the lower part of the picture for the caption and the app's controls.
A square at 1080 × 1080 px keeps one subject whole, a product for example. A landscape at 1920 × 1080 px is for a wide view, such as a coastline or a street, where the frame needs the extra width. Choose the shape first, then move the frame, because a different shape changes what fits.
Keeping the file under 20 MB
The 20 MB limit applies to each image. The cropper shows the size of the saved file in its status line after each download. If a JPEG or WebP is too large, lower the quality slider and download again; the pixel size stays the same.
Crop from your largest copy of the photo. A small copy enlarged to 1080 × 1920 px looks softer, and this page leaves Prevent upscaling off so that the export still reaches the exact size.
Tips for TikTok photos
- Start from your largest copy. A photo narrower than 1080 pixels is enlarged to the preset size and loses sharpness.
- Keep faces and words away from the bottom edge, where the app places its captions and buttons.
- Save a photograph as JPEG. Choose PNG only for a graphic with flat colours, because PNG files are larger for photos.
- Check the Downloaded line before you upload: it should read 1080 × 1920 px and stay under 20 MB.
Privacy
Your image never leaves your device. Opening, cropping and saving all happen in your browser, so nothing is uploaded or stored, and you do not need an account. The saved file does not keep the original EXIF, GPS or XMP data.
Frequently asked questions
What size is a TikTok photo?
TikTok's Content Posting API guide allows pictures up to 1080p, as WebP or JPEG, at most 20 MB each. It names no exact size. For a vertical photo this page uses 1080 × 1920 pixels, which stays inside that limit.
What is the best crop for a TikTok photo?
No single crop is required. A full-screen vertical picture uses 9:16, which the cropper sets to 1080 × 1920 pixels. A square at 1080 × 1080 or a landscape at 1920 × 1080 also fits, if your photo is that shape.
Can I crop a photo for TikTok on my phone?
Yes. The cropper runs in the mobile browser, and the photo stays on your device, so nothing is uploaded. Choose the photo, drag the frame, press Download crop and save the file.
What file formats does TikTok accept for photos?
TikTok's guide lists WebP and JPEG for photo posts. Save the crop as JPEG for a photograph or WebP if you prefer; PNG is not on TikTok's list, so use it only as a step before one of those.
How big can a TikTok photo file be?
TikTok's guide allows 20 MB for each image. The cropper shows the size of each saved file, and the quality slider makes it smaller without changing the 1080 × 1920 pixel size.
