Convert WebP to JPG
Turn a WebP saved from a website into a JPG that apps, editors and upload forms accept, and see what it does to the file size. All in your browser.
How to convert WebP to JPG
- Drop the WebP on the box above, or up to 20 at once. The picker on this page lists WebP files.
- Convert to already shows JPEG at 80%. For a smaller file, move the slider to 70%.
- Press Convert image. The JPG is usually about as big as the WebP, or bigger.
- Download the JPG and upload it where the WebP was refused.
Where these WebP files come from
Save a photo from most websites today and you often get a .webp file, because sites send WebP to keep their pages light. My own site does the same: it makes WebP copies of my photos at quality 78 for browsers that take them. Then you try to attach that file to a form, open it in an older editor or post it somewhere, and it is refused.
To measure it, I made WebP copies of three of my published photos with the settings my site uses: Lake Jasna, and the clay figure and the red bicycle from Metelkova. I added my test logo with its transparent background as a WebP, and converted all four to JPG on this page in Chromium, at the starting 80%.
WebP and JPG sizes of my photos
| Image | WebP | JPG at 80% |
|---|---|---|
| Lake Jasna, June 2019 | 960 × 1200 px, 152.8 KB | 162.4 KB, 6.3% larger |
| Clay figure, Metelkova, March 2023 | 1200 × 800 px, 102.7 KB | 141.3 KB, 37.6% larger |
| Red bicycle, Metelkova, March 2023 | 1200 × 800 px, 248.4 KB | 256.6 KB, 3.3% larger |
| Logo with transparency | 640 × 320 px, 10.1 KB | 11.2 KB, 10.4% larger |
Every JPG came out a little larger than its WebP, and the clay figure by more than a third. That is normal: WebP packs a photo more tightly than JPEG can, so a JPG of the same picture at a similar quality needs more space. The pixel size stayed the same in all four.
Keeping the JPG small
If the JPG has to stay small, lower the quality rather than raising it. I tried the red bicycle at other settings: at 90% the JPG was 405.5 KB, 63.2% larger than the WebP, and at 70% it was 182.7 KB, 26.5% smaller.
A WebP from a website has been compressed once already. Saving it again at a high quality spends space on reproducing the flaws of that first compression, which is why 70% to 80% is the range I would use for a form or an email.
Transparent WebP images turn white
WebP can have see-through areas, JPG cannot. My test logo came out on solid white, its transparent corners pure white. If the picture has to sit on a coloured background, use WebP to PNG instead, which keeps the transparency.
Why apps refuse WebP
Most refusals come from programs and forms written before WebP was common, or from upload checks that list only JPG and PNG. Renaming the file to .jpg does not help, because the data inside is still WebP, and a careful check reads the data rather than the name. Converting writes real JPEG data.
Tips for WebP images from the web
- Look for the largest version before you save. Many sites send phones a smaller WebP than computers.
- Start between 70% and 80%. A WebP from a website has been compressed once already.
- Check that you may use the picture. Saving and converting an image does not change who owns it.
- For a logo or icon with a transparent background, use the WebP to PNG page instead.
- Animated WebP files are not converted here; this page takes still images.
Privacy
Your image never leaves your device. Conversion happens entirely in your browser, so nothing is uploaded or stored, and you do not need an account. Support for HEIC files is included on this site and also runs in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
Why do images save as WebP instead of JPG?
Because the website sends WebP to browsers that can show it. The file is smaller than a JPG of similar quality, so the page loads faster. Your browser saves what it received, which is the WebP version.
Can I convert WebP to JPG without losing quality?
Not entirely, as JPG is lossy, but at 80% to 90% the difference is very hard to see. A higher setting mostly adds size: my bicycle photo at 90% was 405.5 KB against the WebP's 248.4 KB.
Can I just change .webp to .jpg in the name?
You can rename it, but it stays a WebP inside. Some programs open it anyway; upload forms and older apps that check the content refuse it. Converting here writes real JPEG data under the .jpg name.
Is WebP a JPG or a PNG?
Neither. WebP is its own format, made by Google, that can do both jobs: compressed photos like JPG and transparent graphics like PNG. That is why it can replace either on a website, and why some programs still do not open it.
Can I convert several WebP files to JPG at once?
Yes. Choose or drop up to 20 WebP files. They are converted one after another at the quality you set, and you can download each JPG from the list or all of them together as one ZIP file.
