Cut a Picture into Any Grid of Tiles
Set rows and columns, up to 20 of each, and cut one image into a grid. Every pixel stays. A preset numbers an Instagram 3-column grid in posting order.
How to split an image into a grid
- Choose one image. It stays on your device.
- Enter the columns and rows. The tool starts at 3 × 3 and takes anything up to 20 × 20, as long as each tile is at least one pixel.
- Read the note. It gives the tile size, and when the size does not divide evenly it tells you which widths you get.
- For a profile, set Layout to Instagram 3-column grid. Columns lock at 3 and the rows follow your image, and you can still change them.
- Download the ZIP. Names carry the number first, so they sort correctly in any file list.
Why a free grid changes no pixels
When I cut a picture for print I want the pixels I started with, not a resized copy. So with Any grid selected, my tool cuts at whole pixels and nothing else: no scaling, no shape to match, nothing thrown away. Put the tiles back together and you have the image again, when you save as PNG.
Most image sizes do not divide neatly. A width of 1001 px in 2 columns cannot give two equal halves, and a tool that pretends otherwise either drops a column or overlaps one. Mine makes one column 500 px and the other 501 px, and says so.
Grids I worked through
| Image | Grid | Tiles | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1200 × 800 px | 2 × 2 | 600 × 400 px | divides evenly |
| 1200 × 800 px | 3 × 3 | 400 × 266 or 267 px | every pixel kept |
| 960 × 1200 px | 7 columns, 1 row | 137 or 138 × 1200 px | every pixel kept |
| 1001 × 1000 px | 2 × 2 | 500 or 501 × 500 px | every pixel kept |
| 3240 × 4320 px | Instagram, 3 rows | 1080 × 1440 px | divides evenly, post-01 to post-09 |
| 3240 × 2160 px | Instagram, 2 rows | 810 × 1080 px | 810 px cut across |
| 1200 × 800 px | Instagram, 2 rows | 300 × 400 px | 300 px cut across |
The first four rows are free grids, so tiles may differ by one pixel. The Instagram rows keep every tile at one shape, which is why they can lose pixels, and the note gives the amount before you save. Nothing is enlarged.
The Instagram 3-column grid, posted backwards
A profile shows the newest post at the top left. To build a picture there, the bottom-right tile has to go up first and the top-left tile last. The preset numbers the files that way. In a 3 × 3 grid, post-01 is the bottom-right tile, post-03 the bottom-left, post-07 the top-right and post-09 the top-left. Post them in number order and the rows fill upwards until the image is complete.
The tiles are 3:4. I measured that for my feed planner on 29 October 2026 on Adam Mosseri’s official profile, where tiles were 129 × 172 px in a 390 px wide browser. Any post you publish later moves every tile one place along and breaks the columns, unless you post in threes. To try the picture beside your real posts first, use the Instagram Feed Preview.
Tiles for print
For a split wall picture, set the grid to the number of panels and keep Any grid selected, so that each panel holds its own share of the pixels and you can send PNG files to the lab. File names such as tile-05-r2-c2 give the number, then the row and column, which helps when you hang them.
If your panels are sheets of paper with glue margins, the poster tool is the better fit, because it adds overlap and cut marks to a PDF. This image splitter adds neither.
Tips for grid tiles
- Check tile numbers against the preview before you start posting. One tile out of order shows on the whole grid.
- Keep the main subject away from grid lines on a profile, because each tile also has to work as a post.
- Use PNG for screenshots, maps and text. JPEG suits photos and gives smaller files.
- Save all tiles in one ZIP on a computer. On a phone, the Save buttons drop single files straight into your downloads.
Privacy
Your photo never leaves your device. It is opened, cut and saved in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split an image into a grid online?
Open the image on this page, enter the columns and rows, and check the preview. Press Download ZIP for every tile as a numbered file. The work happens in your browser, so the picture is never uploaded.
How do I split an image for an Instagram grid?
Set Layout to Instagram 3-column grid and choose the rows. The files are numbered for posting, so post-01 is the bottom-right tile. Publish them in number order and the last one lands at the top left.
How do I split an image into 3 parts?
Enter 3 columns and 1 row for three pieces side by side, or 1 column and 3 rows for three stacked pieces. If the size does not divide by 3, the note shows the tile sizes you get.
Can I use an image splitter for printing?
Yes, for separate panels. A free grid keeps the original pixels, so save as PNG and send the tiles to your lab. For home printing on paper sheets with overlap, the poster tool on this site is better.
Will a grid split change the quality of my image?
Not as PNG, which keeps exact pixels. JPEG and WebP are saved again at 92% quality, so they change slightly. Any grid never scales the image. The Instagram preset scales down only when a tile would pass 1080 px.
