Turn a Panorama into a Swipe, Slide by Slide
Open a panorama and get a slide count worked out from its width. Change it if you like, swipe to check the joins, and save the numbered files.
How to split a panorama for Instagram
- Open your panorama. The tool divides its width by the width of one slide at full height and fills in that count.
- Compare the suggestion with the note below it. If it says pixels are cut, try one slide more or one fewer.
- Change the shape if the view is better square. The suggested count follows the shape you pick.
- Swipe the preview from end to end and look at each join on a straight line in the scene.
- Download the ZIP. File slide-01 is the left end, so post them in that order and the view opens from the left.
The sum I got tired of doing
Every panorama starts with the same small sum: how many slides does this width want? A panorama of 6000 × 1500 px at 4:5 has room for slides 1200 px wide at its full height, and 6000 ÷ 1200 is 5. I put that sum in the page so that you see the answer as soon as the image opens, along with the two numbers behind it.
The count is rounded to the nearest whole slide, because that loses the least. It is only a suggestion. A long, thin view often reads better with fewer slides, and the box stays yours to change.
Suggested slides for six panoramas
| Panorama | Shape | Suggested | Each slide | Cut away |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6000 × 1500 px | 4:5 | 5 | 1080 × 1350 px | nothing |
| 8000 × 2000 px | 4:5 | 5 | 1080 × 1350 px | nothing |
| 8000 × 2000 px | Square | 4 | 1080 × 1080 px | nothing |
| 10000 × 2000 px | 4:5 | 6 | 1080 × 1350 px | 400 px across |
| 12000 × 2000 px | 4:5 | 8 | 1080 × 1350 px | 125 px of height |
| 12000 × 1000 px | 4:5 | 10 | 800 × 1000 px | 4000 px across |
The last row hits this tool's limit of 10 slides. Its width would ask for 15, so a third of the view goes under Crop to fit. For a strip that long I would pick a wider shape, or Keep it all, add white, and accept bands above and below.
How the slide count is worked out
One slide at full panorama height has a known width: height times the shape. At 4:5 and 2000 px high that is 1600 px, and a 10000 px panorama holds 6.25 of them. The tool rounds to 6. Six slides are a little too wide a window for that height, so 400 px comes off the ends. Seven would cut height from the top and bottom instead. The note shows the result for whichever count you set, so try both and keep the one that spares the part you care about.
A slider appears when pixels are cut, and it moves the kept part along the view. That is useful when the 400 px should all come from an empty end of the picture and not from both.
Stitched panoramas have uneven edges
A stitched panorama from a phone or from software often has slanted or uneven borders. Straighten and trim it first, because a splitter will faithfully keep a wedge of empty space. Each saved slide is drawn fresh in the browser, so the files carry pixels only. Camera data and location stay behind in your original.
A slide wider than 1080 px is scaled down to the width Instagram keeps, which also avoids a second resize on upload. A panorama too short for that stays at its own size, as 12000 × 1000 px does at 800 × 1000 px per slide. Nothing is enlarged.
Tips for panorama posts
- Start the view with something that makes people swipe, such as a path leading out of the frame.
- Avoid placing a lone tree or a person right on a cut line.
- Try square as well as 4:5. A low, wide view often needs fewer slides at square.
- Keep the full stitched file. These slides are 1080 px wide at most and are for posting only.
Privacy
Your photo never leaves your device. It is opened, cut and saved in your browser, and nothing is uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
How do I split a panorama for Instagram?
Open it on this page and accept or change the suggested slide count. Check the joins in the swipe preview, download the numbered ZIP and add the files to one post in number order, starting from slide 01.
What size is an Instagram panorama split?
Each slide is 1080 × 1350 px at 4:5 or 1080 × 1080 px at square. So a five-slide 4:5 panorama is 5400 × 1350 px in full, and any larger image with those proportions is scaled down to it.
What is the best way to post a panorama on Instagram?
Split it into a carousel, so the view stays full height and people swipe along it. Posted as one image, a panorama wider than 1.91:1 is cropped by Instagram, and what remains is a thin strip on a phone.
Can I split a panorama for Instagram for free?
Yes. This page is free, needs no account and adds no watermark. Your panorama is processed by your own browser and never sent anywhere, so a very large stitched file costs you no upload time either.
Can I post a vertical panorama?
A carousel swipes sideways only, so a tall panorama will not join across slides. Use the Image Splitter with one column and several rows if you want pieces, or crop it to 3:4 and post a single picture.
